Hugh Maxwell (c1681-1751)
Hugh Maxwell (c1681-1751) left funds to create the Maxwell Bursary. He was the son of a Dundee merchant, and had been educated at St Andrews, taking an MA in 1702 before becoming a minister. He served in parishes in Forfarshire – notably Strathmartine – for the rest of his life. In his will (dated 1749), he left 2,700 merks for a bursary, the funds to be mortified and managed by his eldest son David Maxwell (d.1775) and his (male) heirs, who also had the right of presentation to the bursary. David Maxwell (1704-74) also studied at St Andrews, became a minister, and later succeeded his father as minister of Strathmartine.
