Rorie Bursary
The Rorie Bursary was established in 1819, in memory of James Rorie (dates unknown) who had been a servant to James Playfair (1736-1819), Principal of United College. Rorie had apparently left instruction and ‘a small sum’ to found a bursary in the Old College, St Andrews; and when Playfair himself died, his will established a Rorie Bursary fund with £100 from Playfair’s estate. The Playfair family retained the rights of presentation.
By the 1890s, the Rorie bursary was worth £4.10s a year, and was tenable for four years.
