Stuart Bursary
The ‘Stuart Bursary’ was one of several bursaries founded at the Scottish universities by the will of James Stuart (1743-1809). St Andrews received £1,000 in the form of perpetual government consols or ‘war bonds’, and the bursary drew its funds from the 3% interest it accrued. Stuart wished to provide for ‘the instruction and better education of youth’, giving preference to those with the name Stuart or Simpson. The right of patronage and presentation lay with the principal of the United College. By the 1890s, the two Stuart bursaries were worth only £6 each, tenable for four years. The funds were merged into the Lapsed Bursaries fund in 2003.
