Pyper Bursary
The Pyper Bursary was set up by the will of Professor William Pyper (1797-1861) in 1859. He instructed his trustees, including James David Forbes, Principal of the United College, and the professors of the United College, thereafter their successors, to invest his gift through the purchase of land; the trustees purchased the lands of at Bear flat and Horsleys at Prior Acres in St Andrews from the St Andrews lawyer William Murray for £430. The annual income from these lands were used to fund one bursar for four years. This bursary was a competition regulated in the same manner as the Foundation Bursaries of the said United College.
