Henry Bursary
The Henry Bursary was created in 1755, thanks to a gift of £240 from the Reverend James Henry. It was stipulated by Henry’s will that one bursar at the University of St Andrews would receive £12 yearly for four years and that the bursar would be nominated by Kinghorn’s minister, Kirk Session, magistrates and town council as well as the Rev Moderator and remanent members of the Presbytery of Kirkcaldy. His will also provided that the bursar ‘be well attested as to his moral character, and his good proficiency in his grammar and classicks.’ Henry invested for the electors of the bursar with the power to nominate ‘some other fit person’. Samuel Charters of Burntisland was Henry’s executor.
