Gray Bursaries

In his 1808 will, John Gray left £2,000 to the University of St Andrews. Of this, £500 was to establish two bursaries of £10 each for the ‘ordinary Philosophy course’, from the will to invest in land or other stocks. Gray died in 1811, but the University did not receive the funds until 1825, when the life-interest of Mr and Mrs Couper lapsed. Thereafter, the income from the invested properties was to provide the Chemistry Professorship. The funds were then invested in land at ‘The Grange’, and the income funded both the Gray Bursaries and the Chair of Chemistry. The Gray Bursaries are no longer active; its funds may have been rolled into one of the other Gray funds, or merged into ‘Lapsed Bursaries’.
