College Hall investors
Technically, subscribers to the College Hall Company Ltd were investors, rather than donors to the University of St Andrews, but they were nonetheless providing financial support for a University project. A list of subscribers to the College Hall can be found in the papers of J. D. Forbes (msdep7), but has yet to be fully investigated. Catalogue descriptions indicate that at least some of the monies came from individuals who had connections to enslavement, and there is a good chance that some will have connections to India. In 1866, Edward Ellice MP (1810-80) agreed to invest £100. He had inherited wealth from his father, the Hon. Edward Ellice, politician and partner in major slave-owning firm Ellice Kinnear.
