Russell Bursary
The Russell Bursary was established in 1885 by a benefaction of £5,000 from William Russell, in appreciation of the education received at St Andrews by him and his brother, James. The bursaries were to be awarded, through an annual competitive examination, to students intending to study Arts or Science at United College, and could be held for three years (as long as the student passed their exams each year). By the 1890s, six bursaries were being offered, worth £30 each. The Russell funds are now part of the Lapsed Bursaries fund.
