George Sutherland Simson (1823-c.1891)
George Sutherland Simson (1823-c.1891) came from a Fife family with three generations of service in India: his father (also George, 1796-1869) had been born in India, where his father (also George, d.1848) had been earning a ‘considerable fortune’. Little is known about George Sutherland Simson, other than that he was at some point in the 5th Madras Cavalry (promoted to Captain, 1855, and sometime later to Major). He had at least one brother and two uncles also in East India Company service, and latterly in the Indian Civil Service. His brother had retired to Britain by 1880, and was living in St Andrews by the early 1890s.
George Sutherland Simson left the residue of his estate to the University of St Andrews for bursaries in/around 1891. He also appears to have invested in the College Hall Company in the 1860s.
