Charles Stuart Grace (1859-1936) was born in St Andrews to Stuart Grace, a solicitor and bank agent, and Jesse Ranken Playfair. He attended Madras College and Fettes College in Edinburgh, then studied at United College before completing his education at the University of Edinburgh. Grace became an influential figure within the St Andrews community. For fifty years, he was a Writer to the Signet, worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland and continued the family’s 150-year membership connection with the Royal & Ancient golf club. He also served on the committee to restore Holy Trinity Church. In 1885, he married Ella May Lindesay, the daughter of the Ceylon coffee and cinchona planter/estate owner, William Francis Lindesay of Balmungo. They resided at 60 South Street in town. When his wife died, he later married Frances May Hebblethwaite in 1926. In 1895, he subscribed £100 towards the construction of University Hall for Women Students in St Andrews. Grace passed away at his home, The Grange, in 1936.
