Gatty Marine Laboratory
The Gatty Marine Laboratory at the University of St Andrews opened in 1896. It replaced the St Andrews Fisheries Laboratory that had been running since 1884: that laboratory had been created by professor William McIntosh, with support from the (government) Fisheries Board, and it occupied a wooden building on the beach that had previously been used as a fever hospital. The new Marine Laboratory was built with funding from Charles Henry Gatty of West Sussex, who gave £3,000, in several instalments from 1892 onwards, to build and equip the new laboratory. Its later history is discussed on the website of the Scottish Oceans Institute.
