Bute Chair of Anatomy
In his will, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847-1900) left £20,000 to endow the Bute Chair of Anatomy (now the Bute Chair of Medicine). This was the most generous of several gifts from Bute during his time as Rector of the University, and it complemented his earlier contribution to the development of the new conjoint Medical School in St Andrews and Dundee (i.e. the Bute Medical Building.
Until this benefaction, the University of St Andrews had just one Professor of Medicine chair, created in 1722. With the addition of the new Bute Chair in Anatomy, the older Chandos chair was redesignated in physiology. Bute’s benefaction financed the appointment of the University’s first woman lecturer to teach and improve female students’ professional medical education.
