The Bute Bursary was created in 1893, thanks to a gift from the recently-elected Rector of the University, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847-1900). Bute mortified £1000 to fund a competitive ‘Dundee Scholarship or Bursary’ in the University. The patronage was vested in the Lord Provost of Dundee. It remains unclear if this bursary is distinct from the Bute Bursary associated with University College, Dundee. According to the University of Dundee’s Founders Report, in 2014 the Bute Bursary had a combined capital and revenue of £21,170.63.
